Following the discontinuation of the game’s live service, Square Enix has quietly re-released a complete version of Chocobo GP on Switch.
This new version of the game can be purchased as a standalone product on the Switch eshop, and contains all content up until the original title’s Season 5. Most notably however, this version removes the microtransaction system and instead allows all unlockables to be obtained through normal gameplay.
In addition, the free version of the game called Chocobo GP Lite has been removed from the eshop and can no longer be downloaded. Players who still have the app installed are given the option of purchasing the new complete version of the game via a separate “upgrade” page on the eshop.
The initial launch of the Final Fantasy kart racer was met with considerable criticism, mostly due to its microtransaction system. Perhaps this updated edition will help the game regain some popularity among fans, although it might have come a little too late.
