It seems we have an update on a rumor from all the way back in 2015, NintendoLife had reported that there was going to be a brand new entry in the F-Zero series for Wii U by Citerion which was then cancelled.
Apparently this was false with the founder of Citerion (Alex Ward) confirming on the Game Informer show that Nintendo never approached them on making a F-Zero title!

Apparently a junior at Nintendo emailed Alex Ward asking them to make F-Zero for Wii U however it is not up to Criterion to make a new title due to them being owned by EA.
This means that there was no pitch or even any development even going on and was only merely a suggestion with Alex Ward not even liking the series.
