Earlier this week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that Studio MDHR’s critically acclaimed 30’s cartoon bullet-hell shooter Cuphead will soon be playable on the company’s Model 3, Model S, and Model X cars.
In the past, Musk Tweeted that his company was working on porting the Unity game engine to work in Tesla cars, and it turns out that Cuphead is the project’s big proof of concept. Speaking during their Weekly Tesla podcast, Musk shared that he was a big fan of Cuphead, particularly its difficulty and surprisingly grim plot.
Musk: “Cuphead, we’ve got working, [The developers] have been helping us make it work. It’s a cool game. It’s insanely difficult. It’s sadistically difficult. It’s a twisted plot. It’s dark. It looks like some cute little Disney thing and you’re like, ‘This plot is very dark’,”
In addition, Cuphead developer Maja Moldenhaur also revealed that it was Tesla who first approached Studio MDHR to bring Cuphead to their cars, and that they were quite eager to jump onboard.
Moldenhaur: “When Tesla reached out to us to bring Cuphead to their vehicles, we were thrilled! Finding out that Mr. Musk was a fan of our game was extremely humbling and getting a chance to work with such an innovative company has been really exciting. We hope Cuphead can add some classic fun to such forward-thinking vehicles.”
Both Tesla and Studio MDHR are aiming to release Cuphead for Teslas sometime in Summer 2019, which is already running “nice and clean” in Teslas. However, due to storage limitations, the Tesla version of the game only goes up to the Inkwell Isle One section of the game. Furthermore, it can only be played with a wired USB controller so as to preserve its tight gameplay.
Although Cuphead holds the honor of being the first Unity game to run in Teslas, the line of cars already has a suite of Atari games available for play through the “TeslAtari” icon hidden in the car’s UI. That said, both Cuphead and TeslAtari can only be run while the car is parked, presumably for safety reasons.
