Dragon Quest Producer Hopes To Speed Up Localisation Work

Dragon Quest has always had a long delay time when it comes to localisation. With 2.4 million Japanese characters to translate, the text-heavy adventure RPG needs quite a bit of time before it can arrive in the West.

Speaking to Game Informer, Dragon Quest XI Producer said that the reason for the slow localisation is due to the amount of text in the game and they’re looking into making the translation faster and more efficient without compromising on its quality.

“It has a disadvantage in that way,” says produce producer Yuu Miyake. “It’s really the speed of localization; it takes a long time because of how the game is and the text by Mr. Horii is a very important part of the game and appeals to the fans. Obviously, we have to look at making that process shorter and more efficient.”

“For the quality of the translation, the translators really have to understand the world itself and get it just right,” Miyake says. “We really do make sure to add the accents of the people in the world to make it work for each individual region.”

This is why sometimes we need a little patience on our side to have quality localised games to play.
