Even Japanese Game Shops Have Started Scalping Nintendo Switch 2
It seems that a long-running Japanese game shop that receives products from official distribution channels in Japan has started scalping the Nintendo Switch 2.
Famicom Plaza listed the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World set for pre-order on April 27, 2025 for 62,800 yen, almost 9,000 yen higher than the 53,980 yen suggested retail price. Despite the far higher price, it seems that many people were snapping up the console, with pre-orders completely sold out the same day. The listing has been taken down at the time of writing.
Japanese users were mixed about the game shop scalping the Switch 2. One user who pre-ordered the console justified the purchase by saying that it is difficult to secure a Switch 2 through a pre-order lottery, and securing the console without the bundle discount is a price worth paying to secure it at launch.
There were some unhappy fans who wanted to report the shop’s behavior to Nintendo, given that they are selling products supplied from the official distributor. However, some pointed out that it is not illegal for retailers to sell products above the suggested retail price, and the fact that pre-orders sold out quickly suggests that the price they were charging is not unreasonable.
