Famitsu: Sakurai Discusses The Future Of Smash Bros. After Ultimate

Very soon, Famitsu will be publishing the final installment of Masahiro Sakurai’s weekly column for the magazine, along with a special feature about DLC development for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Some translations from the column have surfaced a little early online, revealing a few of the topics Sakurai discussed in the column. One major topic discussed was the future of Super Smash Bros. after Ultimate, with Sakurai revealing that Nintendo had yet to finalize any plans for a new sequel, although he could not say “with certainty” that it would be the end of Smash.

You can check out translations of the key points below, via Siliconera:

  • When Famitsu asked Sakurai whether he can create a new sequel to Smash, he immediately said “Impossible!” multiple times.
    • He later elaborated that neither he nor Nintendo have finalized plans for such a sequel.
    • “I am not thinking of a sequel. I am not thinking of it every time. However, I can’t say with certainty that this would be the end of Smash.”
    • “I need to think whether I must release a Smash game or not, even if I have to do something that would disappoint users.”
    • “I currently don’t see a path where Smash can be produced without myself.”
    • “Honestly, we did actually try leaving it to someone else, but it didn’t go well.”
    • “If the series were to continue, I have to talk with Nintendo and have a debate on whether it will succeed or not. I must think about this topic seriously.”
  • Sakurai wrote that he wanted to conceal himself for a while.
    • He also stated that he is still not at liberty to say what he will do or create soon.
    • He continued by saying it may be even better if people end up forgetting about him, but he will be careful not to make himself fade out as it is.
