The PlayStation 2 is the most popular and most sold console in history, but do you know what is about to take over it, at least from current statistics and in Japan. That’s right, Nintendo’s very own blockbuster this year, the Nintendo Switch.
According to SwitchSoku, who got their stats from Famitsu. The Nintendo Switch is keeping pace with the PS2 in Japan. While the PS2 went off with a strong start, its sales tapered towards the end of the year. The Nintendo Switch instead went on consistently strong.
Month | PS2 (Released 4 March 2000) | Nintendo Switch (Released 3 March 2017 |

March | 885,023 Units | 524,371 Units |
April | 512,953 Units | 234,817 Units |
May | 227,725 Units | 127,314 Units |
June | 298,880 Units | 129,971 Units |
July | 367,190 Units | 294,311 Units |
August | 223,822 Units | 254,489 Units |
September | 157,613 Units | 168,810 Units |
October | 116,440 Units | 307,138 Units |
November | 62,025 Units | 372,619 Units |
December | 164,950 Units | 574,559 Units (For First 3 Weeks) |
Total | 3,016,622 Units | 2,988,399 Units (From Launch to 17 December 2017) |
At the current rate, the Nintendo Switch’s current sales result of 2,988,399 Units is poised to overtake the PS2’s 3,016,622 Units for the first year. I don’t know what do you call such success but if the Switch successfully overtakes the most sold console in history’s first year, I think Nintendo can try and keep up the momentum and, hopefully, make the Nintendo Switch the Most Sold Console in History!

What ? Nintendo Switch is way too powerful than PS2 so I do not want to compare Nintendo Switch and PS2 for sales poised at all. What a silly!
I don’t think they’re comparing the power between the Nintendo Switch and PS2. They’re comparing the first year sales of the most sold console in history (PS2’s sale in 2003) and the Switch’s first year sale (2017). Besides I think the Nintendo Switch is a relatively weaker spec console in 2017 than the PS2 was relatively when it launched in 2003, so it’s quite over performing.
PS 2 launched in 2000. Right month, wrong year.
You’re right, thanks for the heads up, I’ve fixed the table.
