John Smedley, the former head of Sony Online Entertainment, has revealed the true reason why Sony blocks cross platform play with Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
In games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, and Rocket League, cross platform play with Nintendo Switch and Xbox One are blocked on PS4 by Sony, but there are no blocks in place for PC and mobile.
As most have suspected, the reason to Sony’s block is pretty simple – they just don’t like to see someone buying something on their competitors’ device and using it on a PlayStation console. Here’s what Smedley said in his own words:
When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a Playstation. simple as that. dumb reason, but there it is.
Investors don’t seem very happy with Sony’s stance on cross platform play, as Sony’s stock took a beating after the Fortnite fiasco last week.
