Gamescom has confirmed that they will be removing the award for “Best Nintendo Game” from this year’s Gamescom Game Awards.
This information was confirmed in a statement issued to theGamer, marking the first time that Nintendo will not have its own dedicated award at the event. The organizers said that the award was cancelled due to “too few submissions”, and did not go into further detail beyond that.
There were too few submissions for the Best Nintendo Switch category this year. The award committee, therefore, decided to cancel the category.
Given that the Switch is in its twilight years, it is perhaps unsurprising that there are not enough candidates for Gamescom to put together a Switch specific award this year. However, some have speculated that the lack of submissions could be because Nintendo themselves is not attending Gamescom 2024, leaving even fewer eligible games than there otherwise would have been.
