Guide: How To Collect Coins To Win Races In Mario Kart World

In Mario Kart World, coins can make the difference between whether you win or lose a race in Grand Prix and Knockout Tour.

In this guide, we will be sharing with you how to effectively collect coins during races, and also the benefits of collecting them.

Three ways of collecting coins

There are primarily three ways of collecting coins in races.

The first way is to collect them on the track. Usually, you’ll be able to find coins lying around at different parts of the track, however they aren’t as plentiful as before in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. You can also get coins by jumping and hitting a question mark block floating over the track.

The second way is to get coins from power-ups, which we will share more later in this guide.

The third way is to attack other players or wait for other players to get attacked so they drop coins.

The maximum number of coins you can collect during a race is 20. 10 was the maximum in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart 7.

How coins can help you win races

Coins are far more important in Mario Kart World than previous titles because having more coins can help boost your chances of winning.

Just like in previous entries, having more coins increases your speed, so to max out your speed you need to get 20 coins early in the race.

Having more coins will also increase your protection and recovery. For example, if you have 0 coins and drive into a car or bus, you will end up crashing into it and spinning out, losing time and speed. However, if you have a high number of coins, you will simply get knocked to the side and not lose any speed. You will also recover faster when you get attacked by other players.

Items that give you coins

There are several items that can give you coins:

  • Coin

Using the coin item gives you 3 coins, an increase from 2 coins in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

  • Question Mark block

Use the question mark block item to get up to 10 coins by hitting the button until the item is completely used. Keep in mind that after the item is used, it will drop even more coins on the track, which means other players can get coins from it

  • Coin shell

This is a new item to the Mario Kart series on consoles. Shooting the coin shell forward will leave a trail of coins for you and other players to collect. When the coin shell hits a player or obstacle, it will explode into many more coins.

Coin-collecting strategy for races

Unlike Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there are far less coins lying on the track in Mario Kart World, so it is much harder to collect coins in first place than in last place.

This means that in order to collect 20 coins fast, ideally, you should be somewhere in the back of the pack (20th – 24th place) and wait for other players in 1st to 23rd to attack each other. These chaotic attacks will drop a lot of coins on the track and allow you to collect 20 coins as quickly as possible.

Once you’ve maxed out your coins, you can catch up to the others by using items such as the Golden Mushroom, Mushroom, and Bullet Bill.

Fortunately in Mario Kart World, players drop less coins when they get hit by items such as bananas and shells (2 coins instead of 3 coins), so as long as you keep yourself in 1st place far away from other players while playing defensively, you should have no problem maintaining 20 coins up till the end of the race.

Coins in Free Roam

You can collect coins in Free Roam as well. Coins and coin stashes can be found in different parts of the track.

Why you should collect coins in races and Free Roam

Mario Kart World keeps track of the amount of coins you’ve collected in races, Free Roam, and Battle Mode.

You can collect up to 20 coins per race, and in Free Roam there is no limit to the amount of coins you can collect.

By collecting coins, over time you can unlock new karts to use. It is currently unclear how many coins are required to unlock a new kart, but we will update this guide once that information becomes available.
