On Nintendo Switch 2, a new type of software called Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is available for select titles.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles include the Nintendo Switch base game and an Upgrade Pack that unlocks high-res graphics, better performance, and even new control schemes and gameplay content exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

However, Nintendo Switch 2 Editions can be pretty pricey, so we’re going to take a look at ways in which you can get them at a lower price, or possibly even for free.

1. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers

One of the best ways to get a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition game at a cheaper price is by purchasing the Nintendo Switch base game with a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher.

A pair of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers can be purchased by Nintendo Switch Online members for just USD99.98. These vouchers can be used for any Nintendo Switch title published by Nintendo.

For example, if you’re planning to purchase Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, you can do the following on the Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 or My Nintendo Store:

1. Purchase Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers if you haven’t done so
2. Purchase Super Mario Party Jamboree (the Nintendo Switch base game) on the Nintendo eShop by redeeming a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher
3. After downloading the base game, purchase the Upgrade Pack

If you’re living in the US, you can save at least USD10 through this method compared to buying the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition title individually from the Nintendo eShop.

Keep in mind that Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are valid for a period of one year after their date of purchase. Don’t forget to use them before they expire!

2. Shop around or wait for discounts for the base game

Certain Nintendo Switch games may be available at substantial discounts physically at retail or digitally via Nintendo eShop from time to time. For example, if you can purchase a Nintendo Switch physical copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for USD39.99 (original SRP: USD59.99)  at a clearance sale and buy its Upgrade Pack via the Nintendo eShop for USD9.99, you save USD20.

3. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

If you’re a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member, you can download select Upgrade Packs for free as long as you already own the base game.

At the time of writing (May 19, 2025), upgrade packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition are available free of charge to Expansion Pack members.

This means you can save at least USD10 by downloading the upgrade pack for free through this method.
