Illumination Entertainment Talks About The Challenge Of Making The Super Mario Movie
Variety recently spoke to Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination Entertainment, on a wide variety of topics.
One of the things Variety and Meledandri discussed was the upcoming Super Mario movie, which both Nintendo and Illumination are working together on. Meledandri first said that in order not to see a repeat of the disastrous Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, they are working together with legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto to ensure everything is faithful to the Super Mario brand.
The CEO also talked about the challenges ahead for the Super Mario movie, which include adapting Super Mario into a three-act structure (Setup, Confrontation, Resolution), and making sure it feels organic and full of depth.
“It’s an ambitious task. The challenge is taking things that are so thin in their original form and finding depth that doesn’t compromise what generations of fans love about Mario, but also feels organic to the iconography and can support a three-act structure.”
