Mario Kart Tour Reportedly Removing Gacha System In Future Update

Some interesting news has surfaced regarding Mario Kart Tour, the free-to-play mobile title in Nintendo’s hugely popular Mario Kart franchise.

According to an official in-game notice, Mario Kart Tour will apparently be removing the gacha system it uses for unlocking new racers in an update scheduled for October 4th 2022. For those who may not be aware, a “gacha” refers to a common system in many mobile games where players exchange premium in-game currency for randomized rewards. Other Nintendo mobile games which use such a feature include Fire Emblem Heroes, Pokemon Masters EX, as well as the soon-to-be defunct Dragalia Lost.

Replacing the gacha system in Mario Kart Tour will be something called a “Spotlight Shop”, which will allow players to directly exchange in-game currency for new drivers, karts, and gliders on a rotating basis. Essentially, while the microtransactiosn will remain, the random “gacha” element will be removed, making it much easier for players to obtain the characters and items they want without potentially losing out due to random chance.

At the time of this writing, it is now known why Nintendo has decided to implement this change, even though gacha systems are notoriously lucrative in the mobile gaming space. We will be sure to report back with more details should they become available.
