Mario Kart World’s Latest Update Stirs Up A Controversy Among Fans

On June 26, 2025 (Japan time), a version 1.1.2 update was released for Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2.

The free update has stirred up a controversy among fans who play online most of the time. Prior to the update, if a random course was selected online, players will race on a course in the traditional 3-lap format. However, after the update, besides the traditional 3-lap format, a Mario Kart World style course-route-course format race could be chosen when a random course is selected.

This has led to some players angrily complaining about Nintendo’s decision to make this change, as they do not like the new course-route-course format and prefer the traditional 3-lap format. It doesn’t seem that Nintendo is taking their feedback seriously considering the change in the latest update.

Here are the patch notes:

General

  • Adjusted courses selected in “Random” when selecting next course in a wireless “VS Race.”

Fixed Issues

  • Made readjustments to fix an issue where rate fluctuations were sometimes displayed incorrectly in “Online Play” and “Knockout Tour.”
  • Fixed an issue where you sometimes can’t recover quickly after falling off the course in “Dino Dino Jungle”.
  • Fixed an issue where you continually hit the wall near the finish line of “Boo Cinema” when transformed into Bullet Bill.
