There have been rumors circulating that Nintendo Switch 2 Edition physical releases, which are Nintendo Switch games that come with an Upgrade Pack for higher quality graphics on Nintendo Switch 2, come with a Nintendo Switch Game Card and a download code for the Upgrade Pack.

It seems that these rumors are unfounded as a major third-party publisher releasing Nintendo Switch 2 games at launch has come out to clarify the situation.

Marvelous has clarified on Twitter that Nintendo Switch 2 Edition physical releases include all content, such as the Nintendo Switch game and Upgrade Pack, on a Nintendo Switch 2 Game Card. This means that the Game Card can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2, and there isn’t a separate download code to redeem the Upgrade Pack.

The wording on the physical version for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Nintendo Switch 2 Edition aligns with the wording of first-party and other third-party Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles, suggesting that this is followed by other Nintendo Switch 2 Edition titles.

The Japanese My Nintendo Store also mentions on product listings for Nintendo Switch 2 Edition physical releases that the game is “only compatible on Nintendo Switch 2” and cannot be played on Nintendo Switch.

Marvelous is releasing Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The game will be available on Nintendo Switch 2 as a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and an Upgrade Pack can be purchased by Nintendo Switch owners of the game.
