Minecraft is a game that can seemingly be played forever. Since its release in 2009, the game has yet to see a sequel. Instead, the game focused more on continual improvements.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Microsoft Xbox Boss, Phil Spencer agreed and said that players are unlikely to see a Minecraft 2 ever. He believed that the old economy of shipping a sequel to move players to a new console is over and that players just want existing games and ecosystems to get better.

“We went through it with Minecraft. We didn’t ship Minecraft 2 on Xbox One to try to compel everybody to move to the next console, because that’s not what Minecraft players want. They just want Minecraft to get better. When you look at games like PUBG and Fortnite and you think about these large games and ecosystems that’ll be out there, when new hardware comes, people are still going to want to play those games, and it’s going to be important for us as platforms to support them.”

That is why existing Switch Minecraft players will be getting Minecraft Bedrock Edition later this month and not have to purchase Minecraft 2
