During Gamescom 2023, Netherrealm shared some new details about Mortal Kombat 1.
The game’s two single-player modes were playable at the event, including a traditional Story Mode and a new boardgame-esque Invasion Mode. You can check out a brief summary of the new mode below, as experienced by Eurogamer:
- Described as a “Mario Party-esque boardgame”
- Players choose a character and explore an area through branching paths, with each node offering a new challenge to overcome before progressing
- Challenges include individual battles, minigames and treasures, with extra modifiers offering a twist on typical gameplay, such as hazards which interrupt battles
- One game board is based on Johnny Cage’s mansion
- Boards will rotate out on a six-week seasonal basis, each with its own unique theme
A new trailer was also premiered titled “Rulers Of Outworld”, confirming that Sindel and Shao Kahn will be included as playable fighters in the game.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19th 2023 for Switch and other platforms.
