During the investor’s Q&A on January 31, 2020, Nintendo was asked about the state of Nintendo Switch sales in mainland China.
The company, which worked together with Tencent to officially launch the Switch in China on December 2019, is “very pleased” with how sales are going. Nintendo admitted that the scale of the official Tencent Switch is “not very big” at this time, and it may take some time to get things up and running. Nintendo is also considering to extend the Switch’s lifecycle in China, and is trying to figure out how to convey to consumers the appeal of “unique software in a very mobile market”.
Satoru Shibata also mentioned a few key things about sales in China. First, he says that the company estimates there are around 3 million Nintendo Switch systems in China, which include parallel imports and those sold officially by Tencent. He added it will take some time for the population to purchase both hardware and software, and the company wants to continue expanding in China.
