Nintendo Japan has issued a statement addressing a bewildering viral trend that’s involving Japanese streamers and Splatoon 3.

The trend in question is “#avスプラ”, a Twitter hashtag which quite literally translates to “Splatoon[AdultContent]Video”. The setup involves streamers using a greenscreen to chroma key explicit adult videos over the enemy team’s ink, supposedly to add more tension and incentive to win the match, lest they get banned off their streaming platform when the enemy team’s ink starts showing too much of the video. The trend became so popular on Twitter, that it seems Nintendo Japan felt the need to issue an official statement addressing it. Roughly translated, the Tweet reiterates the content guidelines regarding use that “violates public morals” and “significantly damage the value of the game or characters and the world” among others, ending off with a warning that such acts will lead to legal action or takedowns from Nintendo.

Although Nintendo doesn’t explicitly mention the Splatoon hashtag, it seems likely that is what this Tweet was made in response to. Whether this warning will serve as enough of a deterrent for the streamers remains to be seen.
