Nintendo Reaches Settlement With Former Contract Worker Who Filed Labor Complaint

Earlier this year, Nintendo Of America came under fire after a former contract worker filed a complaint against the videogame company, as well as global hiring firm Aston Carter, for alleged mistreatment regarding the right to unionize and other matters.

Now, several months later, Nintendo and Aston Carter have managed to reach a settlement with the worker. Firstly, Aston Carter will compensate the worker for damages, back-pay, and interest totaling $25,910. Secondly, Nintendo will be required to publish a notice via email and within their offices informing QA workers about their rights under the National Labor Relations Act, including being allowed to organize unions, choose representatives to bargain with employers, and acting together with other employees to fight for benefits and protection. This notice must be displayed for at least 60 days.

Regarding the settlement, Nintendo had this to say in a statement to Polygon:

Nintendo is thankful that a resolution was reached in the NLRB matter so that we can continue to focus on ensuring that our working environment remains welcoming and supportive for all our employees and associates. That approach is fundamental to our company values. As part of the public settlement all parties remain obligated not to disclose Nintendo’s confidential business information and trade secrets, which are paramount to our development process and product offerings.

At the time of this writing, it is not known whether the other complaints lodged against Nintendo during this period are also going to be addressed by the company. Stay tuned for more updates on the situation should they become available.
