Back in 2015, rumors surfaced that a live-action Legend Of Zelda series was in the works at Netflix, but it ultimately never materialized in any shape or form.
Recently, US Comedian Adam Conover appeared on The Serf Times podcast, where he shared some interesting comments about what happened behind the scenes with Netflix’s planned Zelda adaptation. Allegedly, he learned this information while working on a separate Nintendo project with CollegeHumour: An adaptation of StarFox using the claymation medium.
According to Conover, Nintendo had decided to pull the plug on Netflix’s Zelda project after it had been leaked to the public by Wall Street Journal, along with other plans to adapt their properties, including CollegeHumour’s StarFox project:
“I worked at CollegeHumour and we had a secret project where we were going to make a claymation version of StarFox with Nintendo, I know this because Shigeru Miyamoto came to our office, and I remember that because I asked my boss if I could be in the office that day – ‘cos it was the weekend – because I just wanted to watch Shigeru Miyamoto walk by. He told me no and I’m still mad at him…
“Then, a month later, suddenly there were reports Netflix wasn’t going to do its Legend of Zelda anymore. I was like ‘what happened?’ And then I heard from my boss we weren’t doing our Star Fox anymore. I was like ‘what happened?’. He was like, ‘someone at Netflix leaked the Legend of Zelda thing, they weren’t supposed to talk about it, Nintendo freaked out… and they pulled the plug on everything, the entire programme to adapt these things.”
If Conover’s story is to be believed, its certainly quite a shame that the live-action Zelda project was canned due to leaks. Though its perhaps an even bigger shame that the StarFox claymation series got caught in the crossfire, since the latter sounds a lot more unique than a live-action Zelda.
That said, Nintendo has recently reported they are planning to further expand the reach of their IP outside of videogames, so perhaps the company has had a change of heart and will begin pursuing some of these adaptation ideas again.
