Nintendo Switch 2 Could Free Up More Memory For Games

Internet chatter and reports have shed light on the amount of memory (RAM) reserved for games and the operating system on Nintendo Switch 2, and how this could change in the future.

It is currently expected that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have 2 to 2.4GB of RAM reserved for the operating system, more than the 1.5 to 2GB that was originally planned. According to past reports, the Switch 2 has 12GB of RAM. The operating system currently uses 2 CPU cores, which is unlikely to change in the future.

The high amount of RAM allocated to the OS could be due to GameChat, which requires a lot of memory. Part of the reason being that it continuously records the last three minutes of GameChat sessions for user safety reasons.

Leaker MattAgain as also claimed that Nintendo hopes to reduce the operating system to 2GB and 1 CPU core, but it’s unclear whether this could be achieved. The good news though, is that over the course of a console generation, Nintendo and other console platforms have generally allocated more memory to developers over time, and this is also expected to continue on Switch 2.
