Nintendo UK Files New Trademarks For Gamecube Controller, Sparking Speculation

Nintendo has filed some new trademarks for the Gamecube Controller in the UK.

These trademarks were highlighted by Jo Reggelt on social media, and were filed just last week. As seen below, there are two entries for the entire controller, as well as one entry for the button layout used on the right side. They share some similarities to trademarks filed by Nintendo in Japan back in 2018.

The appearance of these trademarks has sparked a flurry of speculation. Some believe that it could be hinting at Gamecube games being added to Switch online, as the trademarks bear some resemblance to logos used on the retro games catalogue service. Others think that it could herald Nintendo releasing an official wireless Gamecube controller for the hybrid console, as the ones released so far have been made by third parties.

That said, we caution readers to take the speculation with a grain of salt. Nintendo often files for trademarks simply to protect their IP from copycats or bootleggers, so these trademarks could just be simple housekeeping on their part. We will be sure to report back with more details should they become available.
