Nintendo Warns Against Using Unauthorized Services For Wii U Online Play
Last year, Nintendo officially shut down online services for the Wii U and 3DS, putting an end to online play for both platforms moving forward.
Following this shutdown, fans and hobbyists have put together unofficial substitutes for the servers, allowing online play for Wii U games to continue without Nintendo’s involvement. As with most unofficial products and services, these come with certain risks that players might not be aware of.
In light of this, Nintendo has issued a PSA recommending that players avoid using such services due to “unexpected security risks”, which you can view below via machine translation:
We have confirmed the existence of unauthorized services that replace functions such as online play for the Wii U, which ended service on April 9, 2024. Please refrain from using such services as they may pose unexpected security risks.
