NPD Group has published their latest report for video game sales performance in the US for the month of June 2021, which includes the latest sales figures for the Switch and its games in the region.
In terms of console sales, NPD’s report reveals that the Switch was the best-selling console in the US for the first half of 2021 in terms of both dollar and unit sales. This is in spite of the release of the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 in the latter months of 2020. Overall, consumer spending on videogames reached $28.9 billion, a 15% compared to the first half of 2020.
Other notable findings for the month of June 2021 include the following:
- Video game hardware dollar sales rose by 112% year-on-year, hitting a total of $401M, the highest total achieved in a June month since 2008 ($617M).
- Xbox Series X and S was the best-selling hardware platform in terms of dollar sales
- Switch was the best-selling in terms of units sold
- PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit-selling console hardware platform in US history, based on lifetime sales after 8 months on sale (this excludes portables).
