The Pokemon Company released a video for fans living in mainland China, answering questions many fans have been clamoring for.
Answering these questions is none other than The Pokemon Company Corporate Officer Susumu Fukunaga, who is now in charge of the Pokemon brand in Asia (excluding Japan).
When asked about the Pokemon Center, Fukunaga mentioned that a physical store isn’t available in mainland China yet, but official Pokemon Center merchandise can be purchased on TaoBao’s Pokemon Pop Up Store.
At this point of time, The Pokemon Company is currently focusing their efforts on bringing Pokemon movies and anime to China. Fukunaga then revealed the company is planning to officially distribute Pokemon video games and Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) products sometime in the future.
Although Pokemon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon have been localized in Chinese, these games have only been officially distributed in Hong Kong and Taiwan by Nintendo’s subsidiaries.
The Pokemon Company’s announcement on their commitment to bring future Pokemon titles to mainland China is extremely huge, as this could mean Nintendo has intentions of entering the market and releasing the Switch there in the future. However in 2017, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said they do not have any intentions of doing so.
Reactions to the video have been overwhelmingly positive. Many Chinese commentators have expressed their interest in purchasing Pokemon TCG. Some even joked children will finally know “how genuine Pokemon look like”.
