During the full Switch 2 reveal, Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games, upgraded versions of Switch 1 titles with better performance and new features for Switch 2. These editions could be obtained by purchasing a separate code for a Switch 1 game, or by buying a physical or digital Switch 2 Edition game as a whole.
Unfortunately for physical buyers, it seems that some, if not all Switch 2 Edition physical releases will not have everything on the cart. This is according to a Nintendo UK customer support chat being circulated online, where the representative says that “the upgrades will be download codes”, allegedly in response to a question about whether physical Switch 2 Enhanced Editions will have the upgrade pack on the cart.
At the time of this writing, there does not seem to be any official word from Nintendo on whether this is true. The closest potential evidence that can be found is on the Switch 2 Edition page, where Nintendo says that upgraded Switch 2 Edition games can still be played on the Switch 1 without the added features. If physical releases are also meant to work the same way, then having the upgrade be a separate download would make it easier for the Switch 2 Edition cart to be compatible with the Switch 1.
That said, we caution readers to take this info with a grain of salt. Stay tuned for more updates as they come.
