Rumor: Sony Reportedly Working On A New Handheld To Rival The Switch

Decades ago, Playstation maker Sony was Nintendo’s main rival in the handheld console space, releasing the PSP and PS Vita before seemingly conceding the market in the face of the 3DS and Nintendo Switch.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony may be making plans to re-enter the race once again. According to Bloomberg’s sources, Sony is working on a new handheld console that will be able to play Playstation 5 titles on the go, bringing their games to an even wider audience. This idea would build upon the Playstation Portal, which was apparently intended to be a separate device before ending up in its current state. That said, these sources also claimed that the device was “years away from launch”, and Sony “could still decide against bringing it to market”.

This report comes shortly after XBox’s Phil Spencer mentioned that Microsoft was also prototyping a handheld console, similarly “a few years out” from release. The most obvious interpretation is that both companies saw the success of the Switch and Steam Deck and now want a slice of the pie. Whether or not there is enough room for all four players in the space remains to be seen.
