A new rumor has surfaced about a potential Legend Of Zelda spin-off that ultimately never released to the public.

In a report from Insider Gaming, sources claimed that Ubisoft had pitched a Legend Of Zelda spin-off game to Nintendo, following up on their successful collaboration with the Mario + Rabbids games. This game originally starred an unnamed new main character, but Nintendo suggested that the main character by changed to Ganondorf instead. This project would be codenamed “Goliath”, and was being prototyped by Mario + Rabbids’ Davide Soliani and a small team at  Ubisoft Milan.

The project was supposedly in the works from the release of Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope up until 2023, which is when Ubisoft Milan was to deliver the prototype. Unfortunately, Nintendo rejected the prototype in November 2023 for reasons unknown. From there, Nintendo and Ubisoft discussed other potential projects for collaboration, including a new Mario spin-off or Star Fox spin-off, but these ultimately went nowhere.

A Legend Of Zelda spin-off starring Ganondorf as the main playable character sounds like an interesting idea, especially now that Princess Zelda herself was recently made the star of her own official spin-off game. Given that it was Nintendo themselves that suggested making Ganondorf the main character of the cancelled spin-off, we may perhaps see the idea come to fruition someday.
