Rumor: UK Competition And Markets Authority Document Sparks Speculation About A “Switch 2”

For the past few months, speculation has been running rampant about a potential successor to the Nintendo Switch, a rumored “Switch 2” to replace the previously popular rumors about the non-existent “Switch Pro”.

The latest piece of evidence fueling the fires comes from a rather unlikely source. During their ongoing investigation into the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard acquisition, the UK Competition And Markets Authority published an Appendix containing a reference to Nintendo. In a section discussing cloud-gaming competition with Microsoft’s Game Pass, the document mentions that Switch Online is being excluded from the discussion as it is only available on Nintendo Switch and “[redacted]”.

Nintendo Switch Online has been excluded from our shares as Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is very limited. Nintendo’s cloud gaming service is only available on the Nintendo Switch device and [redacted].

To public knowledge, Nintendo Switch Online is not available on any other devices aside from Switch, and its hard to imagine that it could be on any platform aside from one created by Nintendo. Following this logic, many believe that “[redacted]” refers to an unannounced new console in the works at Nintendo, likely a “Switch 2” successor to the original Switch, given that Switch Online is keeping the same name.

At the time of this writing however, Nintendo themselves have yet to comment on this matter. Stay tuned for more info as it comes.
