Ryan Reynolds Can’t Believe Detective Pikachu Is The First Live-Action Pokemon Film

With the movie’s release right around the corner, actor Ryan Reynolds sat down with Comicbook.com for another interview about Detective Pikachu.

During the interview, Reynolds shared a bit more about his experience with the franchise prior to working on the film. Unlike co-stars Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton, Reynolds missed out on the Pokemon craze when it first came out. Even so, he came to appreciate the scale and depth of its setting and creatures when he looked into it, expressing surprise that such an impressive world hadn’t been adapted to live-action before.

“I knew about Pokemon, but I didn’t know much about the nuance and detail, so I sort of just missed it. I checked it all out, and it was fantastic, amazing world. I can’t believe there hasn’t been a live-action movie before.

With regards to why, Reynolds believes that it was because film-making technology just wasn’t at the level where it could be done justice. In that sense, he was quite excited to be part of Detective Pikachu’s pioneering journey to bring Pokemon to the big screen.

“I don’t think technology actually caught up to this. Anytime you get to be part of a pioneering trip like this, it’s pretty exciting.”

The Detective Pikachu movie is now showing in Japan, and will premier in the West on May 10 2019.
