Ryan Reynolds Discusses More About Why He Was Cast As Detective Pikachu

Last month, at the world premier event for Detective Pikachu, Comicbook.com sat down for an interview with actor Ryan Reynolds, who shared his thoughts about why he was cast as the titular character.

During the interview, Reynolds confirmed that a lot of his casting came down to the fact that Detective Pikachu was envisioned to be exactly  the kind of witty, sarcastic type of character Reynolds has become well-known for playing. This is quite in line with previous interviews from the staff describing Reynolds’ voice on Detective Pikachu to be “magical”. That said, Reynolds himself also had considerable influence over shaping the script to better suit such a portrayal, describing his experience as follows:

“I think they hired me for some of that. A whole bunch of us took passes at the script — I also took a pass at the script. We all got to kind of shape it the way we wanted; I got to make sure the voice sort of worked the way I think it could work for me. Inevitably, I’m at the mercy of the filmmakers.”

The Detective Pikachu movie is showing in theaters now in Japan, and will premier in the West 10 May 2019.
