SEGA Acquires Angry Birds Creator Rovio

SEGA, the publisher behind Sonic The Hedgehog and several other major videogame franchises has acquired Rovio, the creators of Angry Birds.

The announcement was made on SEGA’s Japanese website, confirming that the deal has been finalized through an offer made by SEGA’s European branch. SEGA spent a total of €706 million to acquire Rovio, which translates roughly to $775 million in USD. In the official Tweet below, SEGA describes the acquisition as being for “Global Expansion of the Consumer Business through Enhancement of Mobile Gaming Capabilities” and as “”amicable” and supported by Rovio’s Board Of Directors.

According to the attached document, SEGA plans to leverage on Rovio’s expertise in the mobile space to “deliver SEGA content to as many users as possible in the digital game market.”, they also intend to have Rovio develop non-mobile related projects as well. At the time of this writing, none of these potential projects have been detailed by either company.
