Square Enix Considering More SNES Remakes In “HD-2D” Style

Earlier this month, Square Enix announced a remake of the classic SNES JRPG Live A Live, which uses the “HD-2D” graphical style popularized by the sleeper hit Octopath Traveler.

As it turns out, Live A Live might be the harbinger of more SNES remakes from Square in the same HD-2D style. During a Square Enix Radio Show, the developers of Square’s other HD-2D game Triangle Strategy revealed that company president Yosuka Matsuda requested that more of their SNES games should be remade in HD-2D, with Live A Live being selected as the first choice for the new initiative.

An English translation of what Producer Tomoya Asano had to say about this initiative can be found below, via VGC:

Producer Tomoya Asano: “The president ordered us to make more use of HD-2D, so we decided to think about remakes of past titles. So we lined up possible titles and thought about which could be done in HD-2D, and brought them to the president.

[The list included] titles released by Square and Enix for the Super Famicom – ones which were suitable for HD-2D, ones which were unsuitable for it, and ones which were impossible to play, like mahjong games.

We lined up all of them and made a presentation that Live A Live was the most suitable. The second place was ActRaiser.”

As some may recall, ActRaiser was also recently remastered as ActRaiser Renaissance, although the style was not quite in line with what fans have come to know as HD-2D. Whether or not this initiative might continue with other popular Square Enix titles from the SNES era remains to be seen. We will be sure to report back with more news as it comes.
