If you’re always the front runner in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you may have encountered one pesky problem – getting too many coins.

Fortunately, there’s a way of overcoming this “too many coins” issue. If the game detects a coin present in your item slot, the probability of receiving an item in your second slot that isn’t a coin (to defend yourself) will increase.

So only get rid of your coin in the first item slot when you hit the next item box.
