Over in it’s home country of Japan, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has set a new record for the franchise.
As reported by Famitsu, Super Mario Bros. Wonder sold a massive 638,634 physical copies during it’s first week on sale in Japan. Not only was it the highest selling physical release for the week, but it is also the best physical launch for a Mario game in Japan. To add a bit more perspective, the runner up for that week was Spider-Man 2, which moved only 77,348 copies in the country, despite releasing on the same day.
