In a few week’s time, Nintendo and SEGA will be launching Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Sonic Superstars, both bringing a modern twist on the two franchises’ classic 2D gameplay.
Many fans have been quick to notice the close proximity of the games’ release dates, with Sonic Superstars planned to launch on October 17th and Super Mario Bros. Wonder coming on October 20th. The timing has brought back nostalgic memories of when Mario and Sonic were fierce rivals in the 2d action game space, which has long since cooled as the years went by.
Speaking to GameInformer however, Super Mario Bros. Wonder producer Takashi Tezuka says the close release dates are merely an “interesting coincidence”, expressing hope that players will enjoy playing both titles.
“I think it’s an interesting coincidence, we’ve been creating 2D action games for a long time and we, of course, want as many players as possible to enjoy those games. We’re looking forward to as many people as possible having the opportunity to play these 2D side-scrolling action games, Mario and otherwise.”
