Super Mario Galaxy Movie Breaks Box Office Records Despite Low Critic Scores

Following its premier earlier this week, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is breaking box office records with its opening.

As reported by Deadline, the film premiered to $34 million earnings over its opening day, the highest of the year so far. Its also the highest opening Wednesday for the month of April, beating the record set by its predecessor the Super Mario Bros Movie, which opened to $31.7 million.

This opening is in spite of the film’s poor critical reception, with Rotten Tomatoes aggregating the critic score at 43%, lower than the first movie’s 59%. Fans on the other hand don’t quite share this opinion, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sitting at 92% at the time of this writing.
