Chinese conglomerate Tencent has become the largest shareholder of independent game developer and publisher Funcom.
For those who may not be aware, Funcom an independent game developer and publisher known for titles such as Conan Exiles and Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. This news comes following Tencent’s purchase of 29% of Funcom’s stock, including all shares from Funcom’s previous majority shareholder.
What this acquisition means for Funcom’s upcoming titles is presently unclear, although Funcom assures fans that management will remain the same and they will remain independent. Funcom CEO Rui Casais seemed particularly hopeful about partnering with Tencent, and had this to say about the acquisition:
“We are very pleased to see Tencent come in as the largest shareholder of Funcom. Tencent has a reputation for being a responsible long-term investor, and for its renowned operational capabilities in online games. The insight, experience, and knowledge that Tencent will bring is of great value to us and we look forward to working closely with them as we continue to develop great games and build a successful future for Funcom.”
