Yesterday, the New York Police Department officially confirmed long-time Nintendo Youtuber Etika had passed away.
The news spread far and wide, so there shouldn’t be any surprise it reached Japan. Etika became popular in Japan with his reaction to Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS video. Many didn’t know his Youtube handle or real name, so they called him Guile-kun due to their similar hairstyle:
These are some of the comments the Japanese left upon hearing about Etika’s passing:
“Rest in peace.”
“Why (did he die)?”
“RIP Etika is the No. 1 trending hashtag on Twitter.”
“(Didn’t know) he fell into a disease like this… I always thought of him as a cheerful foreigner”
“Can’t believe a cheerful person like Etika has taken his own life with one shot. He must have suffered from intense ups-and-downs..”
“He’s only 29. RIP”
“Laughed at his Xenoblade Chronicles 2 ending reaction video. May his soul rest in peace.”
