It is not easy being an Indie developer. Not only do they have to work day and night to make a game that will stand out in the cut throat market, they have to balance the finance sheets as well.
In a Reddit AMA, Developers of Ultimate Chicken Horse, more specifically CEO of Clever Endeavour, Alex Attar, talked briefly about managing an indie studio’s finances.
In his answer, Attar talked about frugality and financial discipline. Despite the financial success of Ultimate Chicken Horse, the studio still practices the same financial discipline they set out with.
“While I obviously can’t go around divulging sensitive financial information, I can say that once we realized we were successful, our biggest strategy has been frugality. We didn’t immediately spend our cash on a fancy new penthouse office or immediately hire 15 people to start pumping out titles. We continued working the way we did before we had money,” explains Attar.
“The only difference is that our conversations are now about whether or not something is worth the cost rather than simply if we can afford it.”
So if you’re thinking of starting up an indie studio, remember Attar’s wise words.
