If you’re a fan of Mario chances are you’ve heard of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, even if you never watched it while growing up.
While the show is pretty much ignored entirely by Nintendo these days, it still holds a special place in the hearts of many as one of the first ever video-game based cartoon shows. In fact, for the past three years animator Jesus Lopez has been working on a fan-game based on the show’s wacky interpretation of the Mario universe.
In order to capture the spirit of the original show, Lopez’s fangame features hand-drawn animation and designs taken straight from the source material, drawing on his experience as an animator for games like Ducktales Remastered and Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero. His two young children are also involved in the process, helping out with programming and character design.
You can check out clips of the game in action in this behind-the-scenes video published by YouTuber SwankyBox:
As the game is pretty much a pet project Lopez works on during his free time with his kids, the game is a long way from being finished. With any luck, we’ll at least be able to see a completed level or two before it attracts too much attention from the Big N.
