The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a game that introduced a great deal of freedom to the players. The game does not force you into a linear storyline and players are free to use their own methods (or shortcuts) to solve Shrine puzzles.
Speaking to IGN, Breath of the Wild Producer, Eiji Aonuma, said that the game had opened his eyes on how important the level of freedom in a game is and that going forward, the Zelda team would definitely consider that in their future games.
“You know, I can’t speak to what other people, other companies will do in their own games, but I think for me, especially just in terms of the Zelda series, the incredible freedom that this game offers you and how well that’s been received…to me, it means that freedom, that level of freedom is something that needs to be maintained in Zelda games going forward. My eyes have been opened to how important that is,” Aonuma said.
“Going forward, I think we would definitely consider that way of thinking when we create something in the future,” he added.
Breath of the Wild marks a new turning point in the Console Zelda series, providing players with the “open-air” concept which connected well with players, earning them multiple Game of the Year awards in 2017.
