Atari Acquires Intellivision Brand

Atari, one of the world’s very first console makers, has announced they will be acquiring their rival Intellivision.

Back when gaming was just starting out, Atari and Intellivision competed in what many consider the first “console war”, a term that would later be used to describe competition between other major console brands, including the rivalry between Nintendo and SEGA, as well as between Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox.  Atari’s acquisition of Intellivision officially brings their battle to an “end”, with Atari emerging as the victor of the 45-year long battle.

That said, even under Atari’s umbrella, Intellivision will still be permitted to develop their long-running Amico console, as well as release new versions of Intellivision games on that console, if or when it finally launches.

You can read what the CEOs of both companies had to say about the acquisition below:

Atari CEO and chairman Wade Rosen: “This was a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and bring together fans of Atari, Intellivision and the golden age of gaming.”

Intellivision Entertainment CEO Phil Adam: “Atari has been a valuable partner and we have every confidence they will be a responsible steward of the storied Intellivision brand. We look forward to our expanded collaboration and bringing a broad array of new Atari and Intellivision titles to the Amico and Amico Home family gaming platforms.”
