Not too long ago, Nicalis announced that they finished working on Local Co-op for Cave Story+ on the Nintendo Switch. Today, Nicalis has confirmed in a tweet that an update for Cave Story+ on the Nintendo Switch will arrive next week, 15 September, with local co-op being a major feature of the update.

Those who have bought the game can update the game from the Nintendo Switch eShop when the update is pushed out.
