Child Of Light Creative Director Feels That A New Entry Is Unlikely, As Ubisoft Focuses On Games As A Service

The future for Child of Light isn’t looking too bright.

Previously, we reported that a Child of Light sequel/prequel was being teased by its creative director Patrick Plourde. Unfortunately, it looks like that tease may remain as nothing more than a pipe dream for a long time, according to Plourde himself.

In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, the creative director unveiled his fears for the adventure RPG series’ future. Namely, he cites that Ubisoft was not keen on making such single-player experiences right now – as they had more lucrative endeavors to chase:

“Right now, I don’t think there’s a Child of Light 2 being produced…I’m not holding my breath…I don’t think it’s the type of game that Ubisoft wants to make…In terms of portfolio, it’s still supported – we ported it on Switch and we’re still selling a bunch of copies, but it’s just that right now it’s all about games as a service. We can make money out of it, but you can make more money elsewhere. That’s the problem of not being independent while making this.”

For the uninitiated, the term ‘Games as a service‘ refers to videogames with a continuing revenue model. This means that they either offer a lot of paid DLC or make players buy loot-boxes. Gamers have long shown their disdain at such a model, as it often leaves many blockbuster games feeling incomplete upon release nowadays.

It’s sad that Ubisoft now seems to be heading down this dark path. This is already evident in some of their recent titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, where players can pay to speed up in-game progression. Obviously, the self-contained experience of Child of Light would not fit this profit model as snugly.

For now, we wish Patrick Plourde all the best in his future work.
