A day after we learned about how Chinese fans were petitioning Nintendo to localize Octopath Traveler, we’ve discovered more about the difficulties Chinese fans are facing while playing the game.
Due to the Shakespearean era vocabulary and grammar used in Octopath Traveler, which are confusing to many Chinese players, some Chinese gamers have nicknamed the game “TEM-8 Traveler”. TEM-8 refers to Test for English Majors-8, a college level English exam open exclusively to undergraduates of English and other related majors.
Some Chinese fans have even started sharing tips on interpreting Shakespearean era English on social media network Weibo. While this isn’t ideal, we hope Nintendo will seriously consider localizing the game for them.
