Smogon, one of the largest competitive Pokemon community in the world, has banned Dynamaxing, a new battle mechanic introduced in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
With the ban in place, Smogon users are not allowed to Dynamax in Smogon OU singles. The ban was passed by a 87% supermajority vote, showing how many people really wanted it banned from tournaments.
The primary reason that motivated the ban was the unpredictability of Dynamax – not only does it vastly increase the power and HP of a Pokemon, but it also gives it immunity to many different types of moves.
“Dynamaxing provides Pokémon with an increase to their maximum HP… up to 100%. Dynamaxed Pokémon are immune to flinching. They are immune to moves affected by weight. They cannot be switched out by moves such as Dragon Tail or Whirlwind, but they can switch out through Emergency Exit. Dynamaxed Pokémon cannot have their Ability modified by moves such as Entrainment and Skill Swap”
At this time, Smogon is the only community that has banned Dynamaxing. The officially sanctioned Pokemon tournaments by The Pokemon Company aren’t banning Dynamax from their formats.
