DiC Entertainment’s Planned Metroid Cartoon Had Samus As A Man

DiC Entertainment’s Super Mario Bros Super Show and Captain N are widely remembered as some of the first ever animated adaptations of video game franchises to hit the small screen. Now, its been revealed that DiC had quite a few more planned video game cartoons that were never produced, among them a very different take on the Metroid series.

During an estate sale of a former DiC employee, a piece of promotional art from this planned Metroid show was finally revealed to the public. The poster is for the most part a fairly accurate representation of the game’s contents, except for one glaring change: Samus is a man!

Its currently unclear whether this was an intentional decision on DiC’s part, or simply an honest mistake. However, judging from some characters’ portrayal on Captain N, both possibilities are equally likely. In addition to the Metroid poster, posters for unreleased adaptations of Double Dragon, Castlevania, and California Games were also shown.

One can only imagine what these scrapped cartoons would have looked like had they been made, especially Metroid‘s. That said, given DiC’s hit-or-miss track record for their video-game adaptations, perhaps its for the best that they decided not to go through with these four.
