Electronic Arts, the third party gaming publisher who handles titles such as FIFA, The Sims, and Battlefield, has been hit by a cyber attack.
The news was first shared in a report by Vice Motherboard, stating that the hackers stole a “wealth of game source code and related internal tools”, and are now advertising the data for sale on various message boards. According to these posts, the data stolen includes “the source code for FIFA 21”, “source code and tools for the Frostbite engine”, “proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits (SDKs)”, and more.
When reached out to for comment, an EA spokesperson confirmed to Motherboard that they indeed suffered a data breach, although “no player data” had been compromised:
“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,”
“No player data was accessed, and we have no reason to believe there is any risk to player privacy. Following the incident, we’ve already made security improvements and do not expect an impact on our games or our business. We are actively working with law enforcement officials and other experts as part of this ongoing criminal investigation.”
The attack on EA comes shortly after a similar data breach at fellow major publisher Capcom, which led to a number of the latter’s upcoming projects being leaked online. At the time of this writing, it is uncertain whether we might see similar information about EA’s projects come to light following this breach.
